Wheel of fate. Papus fortune telling tarot Papus tarot card meaning 79

Modern students of occultism pretend to have some kind of contempt for the art of fortune-telling and prophecy.

Meanwhile, the study of temperaments opens the way to very precious medical discoveries, and Palmistry provides remarkable explanations regarding the physiology of the large sympathetic nerve, depending on which the signs and features depicted on the skin are determined. But still there is no more fruitful source of research than studying the book of Tarot.

Tarot, Torah, Rota, Aphor - this collection of plates and numbers is undoubtedly one of the purest masterpieces of ancient Initiation, and its study has seduced many researchers.

About twenty years ago we were lucky enough to find and restore the main key of the composition of the Tarot in the form as it was outlined by Guillaume Postel and Eliphas Levi, who did not indicate its actual composition. This composition, or this device, was determined by us in such a way that it appeared, on the one hand, to be completely consistent with Postel’s drawing, and on the other, applicable to the Minor Arcana.

And it is for this reason that the following should be noted: most of the occult writers of our time who have been engaged in the study of the Tarot show a pronounced love for the study of the Major Arcana and an equally pronounced contempt for research relating to the Minor Arcana, from which our playing cards are derived.

There are even many false systems of explanation of the Tarot, based only on the 22 Major Arcana, with a complete disregard for the 56 Minor Arcana.

This is downright childishly naive. The Tarot is a marvelously wonderful whole, and the system applied to the whole body must be equally applied to the head, and vice versa.

So, let us remember that the minor Arcana have the highest importance in the study of Tarot, just as the Houses are important in the study of Astrology. Any kind of physical system for investigating the invisible in ancient times essentially consisted of two parts: a definite, fixed part, mostly numerical or hieroglyphic (and often both together) and a changeable, mobile part, so to speak, moving, often hieroglyphic or digital.

In Astrology, the fixed, unchanging part is designated by the Zodiac and Houses, and the movable part is designated by the Planets and their aspects. Numbers were assigned to each department, and their combinations, by addition or subtraction, according to their appearance, formed the foundations of this Astrological Onomancy, now almost completely forgotten and lost.

The common folk game of jib is an application of the Tarot. In it, the fixed part is depicted with numbers and hieroglyphs, on which the game is played with bones.

In the Tarot, the fixed part is represented by four series of 14 Minor Arcana. Four figures: King, Queen, Knight and Jack, form the transition from the Major to the Minor Arcana in ten numbers, going from Ace to ten in each suit. The Tarot is suitable for many uses, and, like the "Ars Magna" (Great Art) apparatus of Raymond Lully, which represents one of these applications, makes it possible to solve the most important problems of philosophy. But this side of the matter is not what interests curious women. Tarot makes it possible to define certain laws of chance that make it applicable to predictions. With the help of Tarot you can “Tell fortunes with cards!”

The study of fortune telling by cards terrifies the reader who considers himself serious. "That's disgusting!" - he exclaims. But we believe that all study is respectable, and very many interesting observations have been gleaned from the study of Tarot divination. In addition, we have made several discoveries that enable us to approach and use the Tarot with greater accuracy and confidence. Thanks to which, by running and looking through the field illustrated by Etteilla, this unrecognized and incomprehensible researcher, as well as the Lenormand maiden, this brilliant clairvoyant, we could determine the prescription attributed by Ancient Egypt to each of the Tarot plates, which will in the future enable a good card reader to determine on what day and hour will it be possible for a handsome brunette to meet a pretty blonde widow at night, at least with some delay, or without the latter, and I can assure you that it was very difficult to achieve accuracy in this labyrinth of inaccuracy. This is precisely the role of the Minor Arcana of the Tarot. The Minor Arcana brings precision and the concept of time to the main data of the Major Arcana. This was their role in teaching Astrology in ancient times and this is their role in Tarot Divination. You can add an even more precise meaning to this by resorting to the use of a numerical astrological table, which we will talk about a little later.

I. COMPOSITION OF THE TAROT

The Tarot appears to be just a deck of cards, but in essence it is an extremely ancient hieroglyphic book that originated in Egypt. We specifically devoted an entire book to the study of the Tarot, considering its origins and its philosophical applications (Gypsy Tarot).

For a person who wishes to take the help of the Tarot in clarifying the clichés of the past, present or future, all these considerations cannot be of great importance, and therefore we will proceed, as clearly as possible, to expound the contents of the Tarot, considered solely from the point of view of and in relation to fortune-telling.

The Tarot consists of 78 cards: 56 cards called Arcana Minor, from which our modern maps are derived, and from 22 other maps not found in modern maps and called Major Arcana.
The Minor Arcana consists of four suits; Sticks, Cups, Swords and Denarii.

Currently
Sticks transformed and called clubs,
Cups are called worms,
Swords transformed into peaks,
A Denarii have become tambourines.

Each of these suits contains 14 cards:
king, queen, gentleman or knight, and jack are four pieces of the same suit (king of clubs, queen of clubs, gentleman of clubs, jack of clubs, etc.);
then ten cards: ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten will make 14 cards for clubs. The same number of cards are for hearts, spades and diamonds, and there are 56 cards in total.

In addition to these Minor Arcana, each of which has its own special meaning in fortune telling and must be considered, both upright and inverted, there are 22 more cards called the Major Arcana or major trump cards, denoting and indicating the most important events. They apply to peoples and societies as much as to individuals.

These 22 Major Arcana should be specially studied by those wishing to benefit from the Tarot, because the like of this is never found in all cards and card games of the present time.
To facilitate study, the 22 Major Arcana can be considered to consist of 3 series of 7 cards, marked with numbers from 1 to 21, with the addition of one card, marked zero (0), placed between 20 and 21 and called the Mast or Jester.
Regarding the meaning and meaning of these Arcana, studied for many years Etteyloi , it is necessary to turn to the study drawings, studying them one by one.

II. 78 TAROT PLATES WITH ALL THEIR ACCESSORIES

MAJOR ARCANA

The Major Arcana are arranged as follows:

In the center is a hieroglyphic figure, reconstructed according to the most compelling documents we have been able to collect.
Above is a digit (number);
On the left are the corresponding numbers and letters of the alphabet. These alphabet are as follows:
1st - French;
2nd - Jewish;
3rd - Sanskrit;
4th - corresponding Egyptian signs;
5th - the sign of Wotan, according to the Archaeometer Saint Yves d'Alveidre, placed with the special permission of the author.

These considerations and relationships will be very valuable for occultists of all kinds of schools and researchers of Higher Science.
Below, the traditional meaning of the plate is indicated in large font.
Then three spiritual (abstract) meanings are indicated at the top: moral, alchemical and physical.

This last term is used for Divination.
Therefore, it is enough for a Tarot reader to read the name located at the bottom of each plate.
On the right side are astronomical messages, making it possible to determine the day and month.

We invite our readers to cut out 78 plates (strips) from thick cardboard, 0.10 millimeters wide and 0.17 millimeters long, and then stick each of the plates attached to this book onto this cardboard. This will make it easier to successfully study Tarot Divination.
Here we also attach a sample of the Major Arcana (Arcanum 8th) and one of the Minor Arcana (two of hearts).
All tables, i.e. plates, are attached, for greater convenience, at the end of this book.

MAJOR ARCANA

Their meaning from the point of view of fortune-telling The Major Arcana consists of 22 symbolic plates.
We have not yet studied them from the point of view of fortune telling.
Their meaning is quite easy to grasp and remember if you take the trouble to look at them carefully, one after another in sequential order, following the description of their meaning.

In addition, the following will help ease your memory: general rule:
first seven cards denote especially the intellectual side of a person;
following then seven cards indicate the moral side and, finally,
seven last cards indicate various events in a person’s material life. Having noted this, let us now proceed to explain the meaning (meaning) of the 22 plates of our Tarot.

THE BASIS OF USING THIS DATA IS
DETERMINATION OF LOTS (PARTICIPATION)

From this moment on, we already acquire the opportunity to use our Tarot from the point of view of fortune telling and foreshadowing.
However, before doing this, it is certainly necessary to establish a plan to be followed in laying out and arranging the cards.
To fully become familiar with the meaning and significance of the plates is still, in essence, only an acquaintance with the first part of Cartomancy, since the ability to place them is even more important. As we have already said, one should not go beyond the framework of astronomical data, and the Tarot should be used only to depict revolutions in the planets, as a source of future events; but this already belongs to the field of Astronomy, and we must limit ourselves only to the use of the Tarot, governed by chance and fate, so to speak, luck. But, in any case, we will introduce as many positive elements as possible into this study. It will be enough to turn to the beginning of the third part (the key to the applications of the Tarot) to be convinced that human life revolves among four great periods, called:

Therefore, first of all, we have to carefully determine in the places that are supposed to be occupied by maps, four opposite points, two opposite each other, on which we will subsequently place plates that should reveal the unknown to us. So here is our first point, thoroughly established and consists in the following: the determination of four places for placing cards on them,

4
APOGEE
YOUTH

1
START
CHILDHOOD

3
SLOPE
MATURE AGE

2
SUNSET
OLD AGE

It should be noted that the location of the points is considered from left to right, according to how it indicates the order of numbers, whereas the characters are read from right to left. Human life, or an event, revolves in three periods that stand out sharply from one another:

Past
The present
Future

This gives us the following new figure:

In the center of this figure is the deliberator. The placement of the triangle follows the order of numbers, but not the characters. However, since four points are not enough to accurately reproduce the movement of the Sun in the sky, for large Tarot fortune telling we will take twelve points (points), corresponding to the twelve months of the year.
The figure we receive in this way will always serve to question the Tarot regarding minor events. In conclusion, we will receive the following figure, which we must very carefully keep in mind for the arrangement of our cards regarding major events throughout life.

This image, which is very important for a correct understanding of the matter, consists of three circles:

    1. The first outer circle is represented by twelve numbers for the placement of the Minor Arcana. The items are arranged as indicated by the numbers on the left and right.

    2. The second intermediate circle consists of four points located from right to left.

    3. The central circle formed by the triangle contains points in each corner of the triangle, which ultimately represents three points.

These last three points and the previous four will be filled with the Major Arcana. In the center of the figure there will be a person conferring or conferring, depending on the need,

DIVINATION THROUGH THE TAROT

A. Shortcut:

Suppose you need to draw up a horoscope on cards for some matter. How to do it?

1st. You take the Minor Arcana and completely separate from them the suit related to the type of proposed meeting.
If it concerns the enterprise in question, then you take the clubs.
If it's about love, you take worms.
If we are talking about process or any fight, you take spades.
If we are talking about money matters, you take the diamonds.

2nd. You shuffle the cards you have chosen and then offer to remove them to the person who turned to you for advice.

3rd. After that, you take the first four cards located on top of the deck, and, without looking at them, you arrange them crosswise in the following way, and moreover from left to right, as indicated by the numbers.

4th. After that, you take your Major Arcana (which should always be separated from the Minor Arcana), shuffle and let the deck be cut.

5th Following this, you invite the deliberator, without choosing, but for good luck, to take seven cards from these Major Arcana, and he, without looking at them, hands them back to you.

6th. You shuffle these seven cards again, let them be removed and take the first three cards on top and, without looking at them, arrange them in a triangle in the following order:

Major Arcana

1Minor Arcana2

7th. After that, you open the cards so that they are completely visible, and read the meaning and meaning of the predictions, paying attention to the fact that the card placed in number 1 means Start.
The same card that is placed in number 2 is designated Apogee, and the card placed in number 3 indicates Obstacles. Finally, the card placed in number 4 indicates A fall or Sunset.
The Major Arcana, placed in number I, denotes what influenced Past in this case.
The Major Arcana in number II denotes what influences The present of this case.
Finally, the Arcanum, located in number III, denotes what will influence Future, and will determine it.
All this can be done very quickly if the skill is acquired. It is very important to note the fact that if the cards are laid out in a shortened way, the figures no longer represent exclusively individuals with a special hair color.
The king is a person without any other differences. The lady is an ordinary woman. The Knight represents a young man and the Jack signifies a child.

B. - Detailed method:

1st. You mix the Minor Arcana all together and let the deck be cut (cut).

2nd. You take the first twelve cards from the deck and arrange them in a circle as follows:

3rd. Then you mix (shuffle) the Major Arcana and let the deck be removed, and then ask the person conferring with you to choose seven cards.

4th. From these selected cards you take the first four and place them against the cards placed at No. 1, 10, 7, 4th, in this order:

So you get basically the following figure:

In the center of this figure you place the deliberator, if he has not yet come out in the laid out cards. If the person who is conferring has already come out in the cards, then you place them in the center and replace them with a new card from the Major Arcana, chosen by the person who is conferring with you.

The 12 Minor Arcana denote the various phases through which an individual's life passes, or the evolution of an event over four major periods.

Start indicated by Major Arcana I, indicating his character;
Apogee indicated by Arcanum II;
Slope or the Obstacle indicated by Arcanum III,
A Sunset(fall) indicated by Arcanum IV.

Finally, the three Major Arcana, placed in the center, indicate the special character of the horoscope in past(V), in Present(VI) and in the future(VII).

Future indicated in the Minor Arcana by cards placed from 7 to 12. Past indicated by the Minor Arcana, placed from 1 to 4, and the present- Arcana placed from 4 to 7.

All these numbers indicate the numbers of places occupied by the Arcana themselves. This is important to note, since it cannot be assumed that Arcanum VII should always return to the place numbered VII.

However, our readers are so smart that I find it unnecessary to even dwell on this matter.
Explaining the meaning and meaning of the Arcana cannot be at all difficult if you read lessons 2 and 3. However, practice will familiarize you with all these details much better than all the theories in the world.

TAROT

Method of action for receiving predictions
according to op. I. G. Burzha- "Tarot"

We borrow from Mr. Bourges' excellent book (Le Tarot) the following.

TAROT (I)
Method of action for receiving predictions
I

Pigeon . - Remove from the deck as many cards (as we indicated above) as there are letters in the name of your beloved person, and then look in the deck for the deliberating card (Arcanum XXII), as well as the card that will represent your beloved person (Jack, Queen or King) , join these two cards to those received before and lay them out together so that the figures are at the bottom.
After that, very slowly take these cards one after another, without choosing, but as necessary, and lay them out very slowly one next to the other, turning them over and forming a semicircle with them, always from left to right.
At the end of the explanation, collect these cards, mix them and put them in three piles:

first the heap is intended for the consultant or for the heart of the consulter,
second the pile is intended for the heart of a loved one,
A third the pile is intended for the unexpected,

Hawk . - The execution is certainly the same, but instead of relating to the loved one, it concerns the enemy.
Finish with the following three piles:

First a heap for the deliberator.
Second a pile for the enemy.
Third pile for the unexpected.

Pearls of Isis . - Remove seven cards from the deck and cover them with seven other cards, forming crosses from them, and explain the meaning of these cards one by one.
Finally, we will mention the method Gitan(Spanish gypsies), extracted from an ancient Catalan manuscript. We provide its translation:

Translation of Spanish text

Take the entire deck and, having shuffled it carefully, lay out twelve piles, each consisting of four cards.

  • The first pile includes all questions relating to human life, his structure, temperament, body, habits and life expectancy.
  • In the second pile include: his wealth or poverty, his possessions, trade or enterprises.
  • The third group includes: his family, relatives or allies.
  • To the fourth pile: his real estate, inheritances, treasures and those incomes that they hope for,
  • To the fifth pile: love, pregnancy of women, birth, gender and number of children, love affairs and domestic thefts.
  • To the sixth pile: diseases, their causes, their treatment and cure.
  • To the seventh pile: marriage and enmity,
  • To the eighth pile: death.
  • To the ninth pile: sciences, arts, positions and various human professions.
  • To the tenth pile: everything related to the government and state administration.
  • To the eleventh: friendship, charity and generous feelings.
  • To the twelfth pile: illness, grief and all kinds of persecution.

In order to resolve any issue, it is not enough to take only one pile, but three piles are required to form a trigon.
Such trigons consist of four numbers:

For example, suppose the question is:
Is such and such a person loved by this or that person?

This question belongs to the fifth pile, and you must take up the cards again and place four cards lengthwise. Then take ninth pile and place these cards under those laid out lengthwise. Finally, after that you take first pile and again place these cards at the bottom of the second ones, forming a third line along( This Gypsy method is the application of Astrological houses to the Tarot (Papus)). Now all that remains is interpretation.

Method of arranging cards 15 at a time

Placing cards in groups of 15, following the French method, is the most common, and therefore we will first of all start with this method. You take a deck of 32 cards; Having shuffled it carefully, you remove it if you are telling fortunes for yourself, or give it to the person for whom you are telling fortunes, but always using your left hand. After making two packs of these cards, each of 16 cards, you choose or let one of these packs be chosen and then put aside the bottom card, which will mean unexpected amazement. Following this, you lay out the remaining 15 cards in front of you, from left to right, having first noticed whether these 15 cards include a card representing a fortune-telling face. If it turns out that it is not there, you have to shuffle the 32 cards again and perform the same operation until this card is in the selected pack.

So, for example, suppose that when laying out the cards, after they have been shuffled and removed, the packet chosen by the fortuneteller contains the following 15 cards;

Ace of hearts, nine of clubs, king of hearts, ten of diamonds, nine of hearts, eight of hearts, ace of diamonds, jack of diamonds, queen of spades, ace of clubs, nine of diamonds, seven of clubs, seven of diamonds, seven of hearts and eight of clubs, as a spare card.

Here is the conclusion from the 15 cards: Ace of Hearts, as it is followed by Nine of Clubs, King of Hearts, Ten of Diamonds, Nine of Hearts, Eight of Hearts and Ace of Diamonds - these seven cards denote great profit, great success in commercial business and resolution of affairs. Jack of diamonds, queen of spades, ace of clubs, nine of diamonds, seven of clubs, seven of diamonds, seven of hearts, since the card denoting unexpected surprise is the eight of clubs - these eight cards, followed by the first seven cards, herald the unexpected surprise caused by a military campaign, and great benefit for any fortuneteller.

Here is the first solution to the problem.
You then shuffle the cards and divide them into three piles, always putting one card aside after the cards have been removed by the deliberating person. This is done three times in a row. It must be borne in mind that for the card left aside, they take either the first or the last and attach it to the one that was put aside for a surprise: after that you turn to the person consulting, inviting him to indicate the pack intended for him, as well as a pack for the home and a pack for the unexpected. When these packets have been indicated, you remove them from the table one by one and make an interpretation of them successively, according to the individual meaning and relative value of the cards in the packets, and end with the packet intended for surprise.

Cards laid out in 21s

Taking 32 cards, after they have been shuffled, you discard the first 11 of them and then deal the remaining 21 from left to right, and if the deliberator is in these 21 cards, then the interpretation is made. If his card is not there, everything is done again as indicated when laying out 15 cards. This is also done accurately, because the only difference is that the three packets - that is, one for the deliberator, one for his house and the third for what he does not expect - consist of six cards, while the packet called Surprise, it only consists of three cards.

Cards laid out in groups of 3

After the cards have been thoroughly shuffled, they offer to remove them with their left hand and then turn them over three times in three successively. Whenever two cards of the same suit are found in reversed cards, the highest of them is put aside; if it turns out that all three cards are of the same suit, or the same in seniority, such as three kings, three queens, three aces, etc., they are all put aside and after that the remaining cards are shuffled again , offering to remove them, and continue to lay them out in threes until there are 15 cards put aside, and they must contain the card of the person deliberating, since if it is not there, you have to do everything again until the card is will fall out. After this, they take these 15 cards and then do the same exactly as we indicated for the cards laid out in groups of 15.

Cards dealt in sets of 7

The method of laying out cards in 7s differs very little from the method of laying out in 3s. When the cards are shuffled and removed, you discard the first six cards from the deck, putting the seventh aside, and continue in the same way to the end of the deck, doing the same thing three times in a row, and the result will be twelve cards.
If the consultant’s (discussing, fortune-telling) card does not fall into these twelve cards, you must do the same thing again. The way of interpreting meetings or convergences of cards is always done in the same way.

Cards laid out 22 at a time
or The Formation of a Big Star

Assuming that the deliberator is blond, he is designated the king of hearts and then, having taken this card, they place it face up on the table.
After this, the 31 cards remaining in the hand are shuffled and allowed to be removed by the deliberator, and after that, the first ten cards are discarded and the eleventh card is placed across the feet of the king of hearts, and again the deliberator is invited to remove the cards and then the top card is placed on the head of the deliberator's card ( or king of hearts). After that, constantly doing the same thing, all the cards are placed sequentially in the order represented by the numbers in the table attached.

As you can clearly see, the 21 cards surrounding the king of hearts are as follows: ace of spades, ace of clubs, ace of diamonds, eight of hearts, jack of hearts, queen of spades, queen of clubs, eight of spades, jack of diamonds, ten of diamonds, seven of hearts, seven clubs, ten of clubs, nine of spades, eight of diamonds, jack of spades, king of spades, seven of spades, ten of hearts and seven of diamonds; cards released sequentially one after another should represent the following in general.

To interpret these cards, you will start with the longest row, which happens to be number 16, or the eight of diamonds, and where the word appears departure, which you connect to No. 14, or the nine of spades; as a result of which, turning to a special explanation of the cards, you will extract an interpretation from them, continuing to explain them two at a time, one after the other, in the circle of the highest row. After that, you proceed, starting from the left and moving to the right, to an explanation of the cards that form the rows of secondary value: the ten of diamonds with the queen of spades... and in the same way proceeding further.

You proceed in the same way to explain the four cards that form the rows of the center: the Ace of Diamonds with the Eight of Hearts, and the Ace of Spades with the Ace of Clubs.

Thus, it remains to explain the last card at the feet of the King of Hearts; this last one is the seven of diamonds. It is explained in accordance with how it was discussed above in the table about the individual meaning of cards.

Italian method

Although the Italian method is used extremely little, it is nevertheless necessary for a true cartomaniac. Persons who consult with cards only for the sake of entertainment can do without this method, but a person who deals with this for scientific purposes should not miss anything that can illuminate him with new light. This is not because the Italian method would be much different from the French method, since the difference that exists between them lies only in the method of obtaining the cards to be interpreted. The method of this method is as follows.

Having shuffled the cards, they are removed if they are studying for themselves; or they offer to remove cards if they are telling fortunes for others, and you must always remove them with your left hand.

Next, you turn over the cards three times in threes. Every time between these three cards there are two of the same suit, the highest of these two cards is put aside; if all three turn out to be of the same suit, all three are put aside; but if all three are of different suits, then do not take any of them. Then the cards are shuffled again, with the exception of those put aside, and, having proposed to be removed, they are again laid out three at a time until in this way they receive 15 cards, which should contain the deliberating card. If this card is not there, you must do the same thing again until the card is there. After this, these cards are laid out from left to right, face up, and examined in their general connection. So let's assume that the deliberator is a blonde, represented by the queen of hearts, and that the 15 cards are arranged as follows;

First you will consider everything in general and, noticing that there are two aces, you will give an explanation according to the relative interpretation of which we spoke above. You will do the same in relation to two queens, two tens, three eights and three sevens.

Having finished this, you will count: one for the queen of hearts, which represents the confederate, two for the jack of diamonds and three for the ten of diamonds, four for the seven of clubs and five for the king of hearts. At this point you stop and interpret the meeting according to the French method.

Then you do the same thing, counting one on the king of diamonds, where you stopped, and counting to five, which is a ten of clubs; thereafter, continuing to count from five to five, you give an interpretation on the fifth card, if this fifth card turns out to be a conferring card.

After that, you take two cards and lay them out: one to the left and the other to the right, and give their interpretation according to the French method.

Then shuffle the cards, let them be removed and divide them into five piles so that the figure is at the bottom and at the same time place one card on the first pile intended for the meeting, one card on the second pile intended for the house, and one card on the third pile , intended for the expected, as well as one card for the unexpected and one card for the fifth pile, meaning accident, surprise.
This continues until the last card in the deck is put aside, which is called “consolation.” The result of this is that the surprise pile consists of only two cards, while the other four piles contain three cards each.

After this, you take these piles one by one, starting from the first, and make their interpretation according to the above relative explanation.

General instructions

Since it is not possible to give explanations for every change in the cards, therefore, one must carefully study and be aware of only the meaning of the 32 cards mentioned above; at the same time, taking into account the methods of layout indicated in this book: seven, fifteen and twenty-one or another way - you can explain them yourself.

If, when laying out the cards, there are four aces with four tens, then for the person for whom the fortune is being told, this means a great benefit, a big profit, both in the lottery and when receiving an inheritance. Four kings mean great success, and four queens mean great gossip against a fortune-telling person; four jacks represent a quarrel between men and a battle.

At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention when laying out the cards in fifteen or twenty-one sets, that if the largest part of them consists of a light suit, then this is a great success for the fortuneteller, but if there are five minor peaks, this means that the fortuneteller will notified of the death of any of her relatives or friends.
If there are five minor clubs, this means winning the process or something similar. If there are five junior diamonds and hearts, this means good news from the village and from individuals who are cordial to the fortuneteller, or from a completely decent person.

If it is a matter of divorce, you need to lay out 21 cards; if four nines end up together, then the divorce seems absolutely certain, but if there are four ladies, then the divorce will never take place. If we are talking about quite reasonably suspected jealousy, then there will be seven diamonds in fifteen cards, but if the assumption of jealousy is unfounded, then there will be five cards of hearts with seven clubs.
If we are talking about any enterprise, one must have four aces and nine of hearts to proclaim success; if the nine of spades falls before the card of the fortuneteller, this portends failure.
If it comes to any game of cards, it is necessary that in the 21-card layout there should be eight clubs, four aces and four kings, foreshadowing a win.

If they want to know whether the child will follow a good path and whether the property received from his parents will be preserved, then the four aces confirm this and at the same time foreshadow a marriage that corresponds to his desires; if it is a maiden, then four eights and the king of hearts are needed, predicting peace and harmony in home life.

To find out how long the delay in the wedding of any persons will be, whether it will be whole years, or only months or weeks, then if the king of spades is next to the queen of hearts, the ace of spades is near the eight of diamonds, then the delay can last for years. Every eight will mean a year's delay, every nine will mean a nine-month delay, and every seven will mean a seven-week delay.

If one wants to know whether someone will succeed in a military career, the four kings, if successful, should be next to the four tens; and if four aces appear with them, this person will reach the highest position, according to his abilities.
As for changing position or place, be it a master, a mistress, or a servant, then for a mistress four jacks, a ten and an eight of diamonds are needed, and a ten of clubs for their success in business; if it turns out to be a nine of diamonds, then this means a slowdown.
If it is a matter of servants, then the ten and seven of diamonds, the eight of spades and four queens are needed in order to foretell success.

The original and still unknown Etteilla method for Tarot fortune telling

The methods we have just outlined are mostly personal; but since we have never had any claim to seize a monopoly in Cartomancy, we therefore deem it necessary to say a few words about the great teacher in this field of Occultism.

His name is: " Etteila"! Etteila's real name is: " Aliette" He was an apprentice hairdresser who lived during the first Revolution. By chance he came across a deck of cards compiled according to the Tarot, and he, struck by their strangeness, began to study these cards.
For thirty years he studied this and finally came to the conclusion that he had discovered the secret of this Egyptian book.

Unfortunately, Etteila did not possess any synthetic data, which was the reason that he wrote pitiful, ridiculous nonsense next to the results of contemplation, truly amazing.
Too many have tried to slander this tireless and ardent worker, but it is necessary to recognize a significant portion of the truths contained in his works, not paying attention to some of the naivety that is found next to them.
Be that as it may, Etteila applied all his knowledge, all his abilities to the art of fortune-telling and predicting the future, and did this with amazing success, which is why he became the God of the fortune-tellers who followed him, who believed him boundlessly.

As a result, we find it necessary to present his method in all its details, while recognizing it as unnecessary to mention the methods of his followers, who, not understanding this method, only clumsily remade it.
To completely complete the entire Tarot, according to this method, only four card readings are necessary. 26......1

Then you take a packet of 17 cards and also precisely place them under the first cards; and after that, under these two rows, lay out a pack of 11 cards. Finally you get the following layout:

Discarded pack Following this, you interpret the meaning of these cards, taking into account that the bottom pile of 11 cards refers to body, the average pile of 17 cards belongs to to the spirit, and the top pile, consisting of 26 cards, belongs to Soul consulting. From this method of laying out cards Etteila brings out very subtle considerations regarding the creation of the world, the Kabbalah and the philosopher's stone, but at the present time we find it unnecessary to dwell on this and continue to study the Tarot.

Second location.

Mix (shuffle) all your cards (78) and let them be removed, and then take the first 17 cards from the deck, arranging them this way:

Take a close look at the eighteenth card (it is in your hand after you have dealt the first 17 cards) and at the 78, located at the very end of the deck.

These two plates indicate to you their meaning, how firmly established and sympathetic the fluidic relationship is between your client and you.
You can then make predictions by examining the lines of the cards and starting, as always, on the right. Once you have read your line, you move the seventeenth card to your right, and the first card to your left, and then transfer the sixteenth and second cards in the same order, and so on until the very end, when you have only one card left in the middle. This card falls out separately, as if to the side ( It is quite possible that we have poorly understood Etteilla, who always expresses himself very vaguely and incomprehensibly. But in general, this last operation seems unnecessary to us.).

Third location.

You take all your cards, shuffle them and let them be removed and then place them as indicated in the following figure.
The best thing is to draw it with all the numbers on the table or on cardboard and then place the cards on it according to the numbers depicted, following the order indicated by them.

In order to explain the results of this figure, it is necessary to remove cards two at a time, one after the other; 1st from 34th, 2nd from 35th, etc., for past.

For Real the 23rd is removed from the 43rd, the 24th from the 46th, the 33rd from the 55th.

For of the future the 12th is removed from the 66th, the 13th from the 65th. . , 22nd from 56th.
Studying the above table this will be quite clear.

Fourth location.

This arrangement is only an auxiliary method and serves only to obtain answers to possible questions.

To achieve this, you need to mix and shuffle all the cards, let them be removed and take 7 cards from them, arranged as follows:

After this, it is necessary to explain them. All of the above is the Etteila method for fortune telling on cards. In these few pages we have provided a summary of one very dark brochure named author, entitled " Book Thoth».

This brochure, which contains a portrait of Etteilla, is very rare, like all the works of this author. To this we recognize it necessary to add that his method was not seriously studied by any of his many followers, so I am the first to present it in a clear way. In Chapter VII there will be further explanation of this method.

The real name of Doctor Papus is Gerard Anaclet Vincent Encausse.

Gerard Encausse had a doctorate in medicine, but became famous primarily as the author of more than 400 articles and 25 books on magic, Kabbalah and Tarot. He was considered a prominent figure in various occult organizations and Parisian spiritualist and literary circles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As a young man, Encausse spent much time in the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris studying the Tarot, magic, Kabbalah, alchemy and the works of Eliphas Levi.

Papus was a member of the Theosophical Society for some time, published his own magazine “Initiation”, was one of the founders of the “Kabbalistic Order of the Rose + Cross”, created the “Order of Martinists” (the order was based on two Masonic rites).

In 1893, Papus was one of the first to be ordained bishop of the "Gnostic Church" - an organization that positioned itself as "true" Freemasons in contrast to regular Freemasonry, the main accusation against which was a departure from the belief in the One Supreme.

Papus visited the Russian Empire three times in 1901, 1905 and 1906. The purpose of the visit was lectures on magic and the occult. He also advised the royal family as a doctor and occult advisor.

Until now, the works of Doctor Papus are among the most published materials on Western magic.

Features of the Tarot school according to Papus
and significant differences from other schools

In Doctor Papus's system there are no specific rituals of fortune-telling, you can pull out cards with any hand, you can tell fortunes at any time, the number of questions is unlimited, you can ask questions both global and completely everyday.

This is due to the fact that, according to this school, when “charging” the deck, it connects directly to the universal flow of knowledge through the egregor of the patroness of the Tarot, Isis. Thus, the deck acquires a certain independence and character, it comes to life! The Tarot deck becomes a wise advisor with whom you can consult.

For comparison: with Aleister Crowley, information from the subconscious can become conscious with the help of Tarot cards, and therefore it is recommended in a meditative state to pull out the cards with your left hand, lay them out on a green cloth and ask only important questions; Arthur White - Tarot correlates with astrological signs and aspects...

For Papus, the “Justice” card is numbered 8, the “Strength” card is numbered 11.

For comparison, for Arthur White it’s the other way around: the “Justice” card is number 11, and the “Strength” card is 8.

  1. Papus (like Eliphas Levi) correlates the letters of the Kabbalah with the Major Arcana as follows: 1st Arcanum “Magician” is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet “Aleph”, 2nd Arcanum “Papess” is the second letter “Beth”, and so on. The Arcana “Jester”, whose number is 21 and 0, corresponds to the 21st letter of the alphabet - “Shin”.

For comparison: for Crowley and White, the first letter “Aleph” correlates with the zero Arcanum “Jester”, the second letter “Beth” - with the 1st Arcanum “Magician” and so on in order; in the Marseille Tarot, the Arcana and the letters of the Kabbalah are not correlated at all.

To the reader

The attitude towards the art of prediction has always been twofold. On the one hand, humanity superstitiously believed all kinds of oracles, sibyls and fortune-tellers, on the other hand, the matter was complicated by the fact that the sense of reality rebelled against the very possibility of fortune-telling: how can you predict something that has not yet happened? The matter was complicated by the fact that already in ancient times, for one skilled fortuneteller (note that we do not call them wise men or sorcerers, because we believe that the ability of divination is accessible to the most ordinary person) there were at least a dozen charlatans (this trend has survived to this day ).

Humanity has mastered at least two to three hundred different fortune-telling techniques, of which about half are affirmative-negative (that is, answering a question with a monosyllable “yes” or “no”), one third are looking for meaning in the coincidence of letter combinations, and only a small part interprets the various dropped ones. symbols for people. The symbols can be anything: it can be a combination of tea leaves in a cup of tea a person drinks, a combination of points on dominoes or dice, or, finally, card symbols.

Of course, in all these symbols there is only as much meaning as a person gives them. By the way, letters are exactly the same symbols, but they convey the sounds of speech and words. The letters of an unknown language will not tell us anything. But they will open up a whole world to a resident of this country. We will not go deeply into the theory of symbols (it is no less complex than higher mathematics), we will only say that a symbol helps to make the invisible visible; translate information contained in the subconscious in a hidden form into a disclosed form, accessible to interpretation and perception by the conscious mind. Thus, the fortuneteller explains to the questioner only what he actually already knows himself - it is not without reason that in most fortune-telling systems the questioner must determine or select the symbols.

Likewise, card fortune telling can be a waste of time for the uninitiated and a most exciting activity for those who take the trouble to read this book. The earliest maps found date back to the 13th–14th centuries. And the first bans on card games date back to the same period. Cards awakened a sense of excitement in a person, initially opening the way for him to enrichment, because the word “Tarot” (or “Tarot”) itself is often translated as “the road of lords.” The opportunity to quickly and easily get rich captivated people so much that for quite a long time no one attached any importance to the esoteric meaning of the cards. However, many more people were completely ruined in the blindness of excitement, and those who perfectly mastered the art of card playing or cheating, as a rule, ended badly. Does anyone know of a card player who, having become fabulously rich from gambling, would leave the casino and live a peaceful, prosperous and serene life? Alas, as a rule, the winner, no matter how much he has won, again strives for the green table in order to fight with fate again and again. So for quite a long time, Tarot cards were a source of excitement along with roulette and dice.

Their new, unusual discovery took place in the last 200 years. The esotericists who studied them (Court de Gebelin, Etteilla, Marie Lenormand, Eliphas Levi, Papus, A.E. White, A. Crowley) believed that they were restoring knowledge that once really existed, bringing the drawings of the cards in line with such esoteric disciplines as astrology, Kabbalism, magic, etc. Attempts were made to compare the Tarot with various systems of signs, but they had to swap letters or signs, insert something, discard something, etc. There were attempts to compare the Tarot with the Russian alphabet, but they were successful did not have.

There are quite a lot of legends shrouded in mystical fog surrounding the origin of the Tarot. Their creation is attributed to both the Egyptian god Thoth and the mythical scientist Hermes Trismegistus. In 1781, the French linguist Cour de Geblein argued that the very concept of "tarot" was based on an ancient Egyptian ritual associated with the cult of the god of books and writing, Thoth, who compiled the "book" of Egyptian wisdom. Others think that it comes from India, from Morocco, as a graphic “language”. Some even claim that this knowledge was transmitted to the Egyptian priests from Atlantis itself. Many believe that the gypsies brought it with them when they arrived in Europe in 1417 (however, there is evidence that by that time playing cards, that is, the Minor Arcana of the Tarot, were already in use).

According to one version, the Arcana of the Tarot are a miraculously preserved Egyptian hieroglyphic book consisting of 78 tables. It is known that in the Library of Alexandria, in addition to papyri and parchments, there were many books consisting of a large number of clay or wooden tables. Legend says that once these were medals with images and numbers embossed on them, then metal plates, then leather cards and, finally, paper cards.

A deck of magical Tarot cards includes 56 number and "court" cards - called the Minor Arcana - and 22 symbolic cards of the Major Arcana. The Minor Arcana (56 cards) consists of four suits: Wands (clubs), Cups (hearts), Swords (spades), Denarii (diamonds). Each suit contains 14 cards: king, queen, horseman, jack and number cards from ace to ten. The Major Arcana (22 cards) have a large number of interrelated meanings. The word “Arcanum” is derived from the Latin “arcanum” - “secret”.

The Major Arcana are divided into three series of 7 cards, marked with numbers from 1 to 21. The first seven cards relate to the intellectual sphere of human life, cards from 8 to 14 relate to the moral sphere, cards from 15 to 21 mean various events of material life. The twenty-second, or Zero card - “Jester” - is placed between 20 and 21, in its value it is equal to all 56 cards of the Minor Arcana, this is the human soul.

Many philosophers and spiritual leaders of the 20th century who did not consider themselves part of the Hermetic tradition, from Ouspensky and Osho to Jung and Timothy Leary, also studied and practiced the Tarot. So Tarot undoubtedly has a powerful egregor. In the Hermetic tradition, it is believed that the ancient Hebrews received their esoteric knowledge from the Egyptians, so the twenty-two letters and ten Sephiroth of the Kabbalah - the basis of the Tarot system - are essentially of Egyptian origin. According to legend, in Ancient Egypt there was a temple in which the mysteries of occult initiation were held. Each of the successive stages of initiation was carried out in a special room. There were 22 of them in total. On the walls of the rooms there were symbolic paintings, from which the Great Arcana of the Tarot were subsequently derived. A detailed account of these mysteries and the ancient paintings of the Tarot can be found in the book “Egyptian Mysteries,” attributed to Iamblichus and translated into Russian by the Sophia publishing house. Some researchers dispute the Egyptian origin of the Tarot. Indeed, other than the writing attributed to Iamblichus and the traditions of the Hermetic orders, we have no evidence of the existence of the “Book of Thoth” (Great Arcana of the Tarot) in Ancient Egypt. The ancient Hebrew Kabbalistic roots can be traced much more clearly in the Tarot, and skeptically oriented Tarot adherents suggest that the starting point in the history of this system is 300 AD - the approximate date of the creation of Sepher Yetzirah, a fundamental work on Kabbalah, which details the astrological symbolism of the Hebrew alphabet, which formed the basis of the basis of the Tarot.

The Tarot summarizes the symbolic system of Hermeticism. As the well-known occult researcher P. D. Uspensky aptly put it, “Tarot in relation to metaphysics is the same as abacus is in relation to arithmetic.”

Each card corresponds to a number, a letter of the Hebrew (sometimes Sanskrit) alphabet, a sign of a planet, a zodiac constellation, a symbol of a substance - and one of the twists of fate, some area of human temperament. The combination of cards drawn will tell a lot for an experienced interpreter, but for an inexperienced one, a good and detailed guide to Tarot cards, such as, for example, the book by Dr. Papus, will help.

The Tarot deck in various combinations of symbolic meanings of the cards is an attempt to present a complete psychological and eventful picture of a person’s life. This is the basis for its use for fortune telling.

At the same time, we must be aware that cards do not predict the future, they only suggest how it may turn out due to certain circumstances. Circumstances are made up of a bizarre mosaic of little things. Therefore, even the great predictor Nostradamus, in whose “Prophecies” one can see a lot of amazingly accurate predictions about the destinies of countries and peoples, never indicated either the place or time of their occurrence, or personalities, and certainly did not give recipes on how this cataclysm can be prevented.

Briefly about the author

Dr. Gerard Encausse (1865–1916), who wrote under the esoteric pseudonym Papus, has been called the “resurrector of French Hermeticism.” A famous occult writer, astrologer and palmist, head of the Supreme Council of Martinists of France, he first came to Russia in 1902, where he found many fans and adherents. In October 1905, Papus was introduced to Emperor Nicholas II, who wished to know the future of Russia. Papus wrote many books on the occult, including Kabbalah and Practical Magic. In his book “The Gypsy Tarot,” he connected the symbols of the Tarot with world esoteric teaching and put forward his theory of predictions.

Gerard Encausse most likely took his pseudonym from the ancient Roman comedy atellana, where a funny, learned old man usually performed under this name.

Introduction

Modern students of occultism pretend to have some sort of contempt for the art of divination and prophecy.

"Tara, Torah, Rota, Aphor" - this collection of plates and numbers is undoubtedly one of the purest masterpieces of ancient Initiation, the study of which has seduced many researchers.

About twenty years ago we were lucky enough to find and restore the main key of the composition of the Tarot in the form as it was outlined by Guillaume Postel and Eliphas Levi, who did not indicate its actual composition. This composition or this device was determined by us in such a way that it was, on the one hand, completely consistent with Postel’s drawing, and on the other, applicable to the Minor Arcana. And it is precisely for this reason that the following should be noted: most of the occult writers of our time who have been engaged in the study of the Tarot show a pronounced love for the study of the Major Arcana and an equally pronounced contempt for research relating to the Minor Arcana, from which our playing cards are derived.

Numbers were assigned to each department, and their combinations by addition or subtraction, according to their appearance, formed the basis of this astrological onomancy, now almost completely forgotten and lost.

The common folk game of jib is an application of the Tarot. In it, the stationary part is depicted with “numbers” and “hieroglyphs”, on which the game is played with “bones”.

In the Tarot, the fixed part is represented by four series of 14 Minor Arcana. Four figures: King, Queen, Knight and Jack, form the transition from the Major to the Minor Arcana in ten numbers, going from Ace to ten in each suit.

The great philosopher and alchemist Raymond Lull

The Tarot is suitable for many uses, and, like the "Ars Magna" (Great Art) apparatus of Raymond Lully, which represents one of these applications, makes it possible to solve the most important problems of philosophy. But this side of the matter is not what interests curious women. Tarot makes it possible to define certain laws of chance that make it applicable to predictions. With the help of Tarot you can “tell fortunes with cards.”

The study of fortune telling by cards terrifies the reader who considers himself serious. "That's disgusting!" - he exclaims. But we believe that all study is honorable, and that many interesting observations have been gleaned from the study of Tarot divination. In addition, we have made several discoveries that enable us to approach and use the Tarot with greater accuracy and confidence. Thanks to which, by running and looking through the field illustrated by Etteilla, this unrecognized and incomprehensible researcher, as well as the Lenormand maiden, this brilliant clairvoyant, we were able to determine the prescription attributed by Ancient Egypt to each of the Tarot plates, which will enable in the future a good card reader to determine on what day and hour will it be possible for a handsome brunette to meet a pretty blonde widow at night, at least with some delay, or without the latter, and I can assure you that it was very difficult to achieve accuracy in this labyrinth of inaccuracy.

Chapter I. Composition of the Tarot

Tarot looks like just a deck of cards, but in essence it is an extremely ancient hieroglyphic book that appeared in Egypt.

We have dedicated an entire book specifically to the study of the Tarot, looking at its origins and its philosophical applications.

For a person who wishes to take the help of the Tarot in clarifying the clichés of the past, present or future, all these considerations cannot be of great importance, and therefore we will proceed as clearly as possible to present the contents of the Tarot, considered solely from the point of view of and in relation to fortune-telling. The Tarot consists of 78 cards: 56 cards called the Minor Arcana, from which our modern cards are derived, and 22 other cards not found in modern cards and called the Major Arcana.

The Minor Arcana consists of four suits; Sticks, Cups, Swords and Denarii (see pictures below).

Currently, in the playing deck, Sticks have been transformed and are called clubs. Cups are called hearts, Swords are transformed into spades, and Denarii become diamonds.

Each of these suits contains 14 cards: king, queen, cavalier (or knight) and jack, representing four figures of the same suit (king-clubs, queen-clubs, cavalier-clubs, jack-clubs, etc.); then ten cards: ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten - will make 14 cards for clubs. The same number of cards are for hearts, spades and diamonds, and there are 56 cards in total.

Horus is a great hierophite. Drawing of Eliphas by Leia

In addition to these Minor Arcana, each of which has its own special meaning in fortune telling and must be considered, both upright and inverted, there are 22 more cards called the Major Arcana or major trump cards, denoting and indicating the most important events. They apply to nations and societies as much as to individuals.

Regarding the meaning and meaning of these Arcana, studied for many years by Etteila, it is necessary to turn to the study of the drawings contained in this book, studying them one by one.

Chapter II. 78 Tarot plates with all their accessories

MAJOR ARCANA

The Major Arcana are arranged as follows.

In the center is a hieroglyphic figure, reconstructed according to the most compelling documents we have been able to collect.

Above is a digit (number); On the left are the corresponding numbers and letters of the alphabet. These alphabets are as follows: 1st - French; 2nd – Jewish; 3rd – Sanskrit; 4th – corresponding Egyptian signs; 5th - the sign of Bhutan, according to the Archaeometer of Saint-Yves d'Alveidre, placed with the special permission of the author.

These considerations and relationships will be very valuable for occultists of all kinds of schools and researchers of Higher Science.

Below, the traditional meaning of the plate is indicated in large font. Then three spiritual (abstract) meanings are indicated at the top: moral, alchemical and physical. This last term is used for fortune telling. Therefore, for the fortune-telling Tarot it is enough to read the name located at the bottom of each plate.

On the right side are astronomical messages, making it possible to determine the day and month.

We invite our readers to cut out 78 plates (strips) from thick cardboard 0.1 cm thick, and then stick each of the plates attached to this book onto this cardboard. This will make it easier to successfully study Tarot Divination.

Here we also attach a sample of the Major Arcana (Arcanum 8th) and one of the Minor Arcana (two of hearts).

All tables, i.e. plates, are attached, for greater convenience, at the end of this book.

Chapter III. Unfolding and explanation (reading Tarot plates)

MAJOR ARCANA
Their meaning from the point of view of fortune telling

The Major Arcana consists of 22 symbolic plates. We have not yet studied them from the point of view of fortune telling. Their meaning is quite easy to grasp and remember if you take the trouble to look at them carefully, one after another in sequential order, following the description of their meaning.

In addition, the following general rule will serve to facilitate memory: the first seven cards especially indicate the intellectual side of a person; the next seven cards then indicate the moral side and, finally, the last seven cards indicate various events in a person’s material life. Having noted this, let us now proceed to explain the meaning (meaning) of the 22 plates of our Tarot.

7th card of the Indian Tarot

BASIS OF APPLICATION OF THIS DATA, DETERMINATION OF LOTS (PARTICIPATION)

From this moment on, we already acquire the opportunity to use our Tarot from the point of view of fortune telling and foreshadowing.

However, before doing this, it is certainly necessary to establish a plan that will be followed in the layout and arrangement of the cards.

But in any case, we will introduce as many positive elements as possible into this study. It will be enough to turn to the beginning of the third part (the key to the applications of the Tarot) to be convinced that human life revolves among four great periods, called:

CHILDHOOD – YOUTH – MATURE AGE – OLD AGE

If they are not engaged in Human Life and only wish to see the evolution of the Event, it will also pass through four large phases of evolution:

BEGINNING – APOGEE – SLOPE – SUNSET

Therefore, first of all, we have to carefully determine in the places that are supposed to be occupied by maps, four opposite points, two opposite each other, on which we will subsequently place plates that should reveal the unknown to us.

So here is our first point, thoroughly established and consists in the following: the determination of four places for placing cards on them.

It should be noted that the arrangement of items is considered from left to right, as indicated by the order of numbers, while the symbols are read from right to left. Human life, or an event, revolves in three periods that stand out sharply from one another:

PAST – PRESENT – FUTURE

These last three points and the four previous ones will be filled with the Major Arcana.

In the center of the figure there will be a person deliberating or conferring, depending on the need.

DIVINATION THROUGH THE TAROT

A. Shortcut:

Suppose you need to draw up a horoscope on cards for some matter. How to do it?

1. You take the Minor Arcana and completely separate from them the suit related to the type of proposed meeting.

If it concerns an enterprise in mind, then you take clubs.

When it comes to love, you take worms.

If it's about a process or some kind of struggle, you take spades.

When it comes to money matters, you take diamonds.

2. You shuffle the cards you have chosen and then offer to remove them to the person who turned to you for advice.

3. After that, you take the first four cards located on top of the deck, and, without looking at them, you arrange them crosswise in the following way, and from left to right, as indicated by the numbers.

4. After that, you take your Major Arcana (which should always be separated from the Minor Arcana), shuffle and let the deck be cut.

5. Following this, you invite the deliberator, without choosing, but for good luck, to take seven cards from these Major Arcana, and he, without looking at them, hands them back to you.

6. You shuffle these seven cards again, let them be removed and take the first three cards on top and, without looking at them, arrange them in a triangle in the following order:

So you get the following figure:

7th. After that, you open the cards so that they are completely visible, and read the meaning and significance of the predictions, noting that the card placed in number 1 denotes the Beginning.

The same card that is placed in number 2 is designated Apogee, and the card placed in number 3 is designated Obstacles. Finally, the card placed in number 4 represents the Fall or Decline.

The Major Arcana, placed in number 1, denotes what influenced the Past in this matter.

The Major Arcanum in number II denotes what influences the Present of a given matter. Finally, the Arcanum, located in number III, denotes what will influence the Future and determine it.

B. Detailed method:

1, 10, 7 and 4, in this order:

5th. Finally, you place the last three cards in a triangle in the center of the figures in this order:

So you get basically the following figure:

Our readers are so smart that I find it unnecessary to even dwell on this matter.

Explaining the meaning and meaning of the Arcana cannot be at all difficult if you read lessons 2 and 3. However, practice will familiarize you with all these details much better than all the theories in the world.

In the center of this figure you place the deliberator, if he has not yet come out in the laid out cards. If the person who is conferring has already come out in the cards, then you place them in the center and replace them with a new card from the Major Arcana, chosen by the person who is conferring with you.

The 12 Minor Arcana denote the various phases through which the life of an individual passes, or the evolution of an event over four great periods.

The beginning is indicated by Major Arcana 1, indicating his character; The apogee is indicated by Arcanum II; The Slope or Obstacle is indicated by Arcanum III, and the Sunset (fall) is indicated by Arcanum IV.

Finally, the three Major Arcana, placed in the center, indicate the special character of the horoscope in the Past (V), in the Present (VI) and in the Future (VII).

The future is indicated in the Minor Arcana by cards placed from 7 to 12. The past is indicated by the Minor Arcana placed from 1 to 4, and the present by Arcana placed from 4 to 7.

All these numbers indicate the numbers of places occupied by the Arcana themselves. This is important to note, since it cannot be assumed that Arcanum VII should always return to the place numbered VII.

Tarot

Method of action for obtaining predictions according to op. I. G. Burzha “Tarot”.

We borrow from Mr. Bourges' excellent book (Le Tarot) the following.

Method of action for receiving predictions

I. Dove. Remove from the deck as many cards (as we indicated above) as there are letters in the name of your beloved person, and then look in the deck for the deliberating card (Arcanum XXII), as well as the card that will represent your beloved person (jack, queen or king), attach these two cards to those received earlier and lay them out together so that the figures are at the bottom.

After that, very slowly take these cards one after another, without choosing, but as necessary, and lay them out very slowly one next to the other, turning them over and forming a semicircle with them, always from left to right.

At the end of the explanation, these cards are collected, mixed and placed in three piles: the first pile is intended for the consultant or for the heart of the consulter, the second pile is intended for the heart of the beloved person, and the third pile is intended for the unexpected.

II. Hawk. The fulfillment is certainly the same, but instead of relating to the loved one, it concerns the enemy. Finish with the following three piles:

The first pile for the deliberator.

The second pile is for the enemy.

The third pile is for the unexpected.

III. Pearls of Isis. They remove seven cards from the deck and cover them with seven other cards, forming crosses from them, and explain the meaning of these cards one by one.

Finally, we will mention the method of the gitans (Spanish gypsies), extracted from an ancient Catalan manuscript. We provide its translation:

“Take the entire deck and, having shuffled it carefully, lay out twelve piles, each consisting of four cards.

To the first pile include all questions relating to a person’s life, his structure, body temperament, habits and life expectancy.

In the second pile include: his wealth or poverty, his possessions, trade or enterprises.

The third group includes: his family, relatives or allies.

To the fourth pile: his real estate, inheritances, treasures and those incomes for which they hope.

To the fifth pile: love, pregnancy of women, birth, gender and number of children, love affairs and domestic thefts.

To the sixth pile: diseases, their causes, their treatment and cure.

To the seventh pile: marriage and enmity.

To the eighth pile: death.

To the ninth pile: sciences, arts, positions and various human professions.

One of the most famous and sought-after decks is the Papus Tarot, created by the famous Kabbalist oculist and historian who studies the origins of Tarot cards.

The history of the creation of Thoreau Papus and the graphics of the deck

The Papus Tarot is a deck that belongs to the French Tarot school. These are traditional cards that require special magical knowledge to work with them. However, beginners can also find an approach to them if they study the book that is sold along with the cards.

The graphics of Papus's cards are not very bright; they are designed in simple colors. For example, the senior Arcana Magician is depicted as a man who stands in front of a table made of stone, on which there is a Sword, Pentacle and Cup. There is a rod in the hand, and an inverted figure eight is located above the head - the sign of infinity.

The images of the major Arcana are drawn to the smallest detail, so cards with the minor Arcana may seem only like sketches. They depict only black and white symbols and numbers. For example, on the Arcana card “Two of Cubes” only two cups are depicted. Nevertheless, many magicians and fortune tellers like this kind of graphics, as it does not look pretentious and does not distract from their work.

Papus Tarot spread

There are many layouts for this Tarot, however, the most common one consists of 12 cards. At the same time, there are absolutely no restrictions on the scope of fortune telling and the number of questions. The cards are laid out in the form of a diamond, counterclockwise, with the first one located in the side corner of the diamond on the left side. If the card has already fallen out, then it must be placed in the center of the diamond.

The Papus Tarot in this scenario is not as difficult to interpret as it might seem at first glance. The first three cards tell about what happened in the past, all the important circumstances and vicissitudes. Cards 4, 5 and 6 will tell about what is currently happening in the life of the questioner, and cards from 7 to 12 are what awaits in the future.

If the senior Arcana are present in the layout, then they predict the mood that is present in a person’s life at certain periods. After all the meanings are known, the questioner must take the four major Arcana from the deck. The first will tell about the beginning of life's journey, the second - about the highest point of development, the third - about all the obstacles and dangers that await along the path of life, the fourth - about how life will end or the process about which they are asking will end.

There is another known layout used by Italian magicians. It is easy to use and interpret, but always produces correct and accurate results. The magician shuffles the entire deck, lays out the cards face down and asks the person to select 48 cards, then arranges them into 12 parts, each containing four cards. Each part is then analyzed separately. Even Papus recognized the universality of his invention; Tarot cards in this layout can tell the whole story about a person’s life.

The first part is the circumstances that affect the life of the questioner, the second is money and financial affairs, the third is family and family relationships, the fourth is the affairs and concerns of all relatives, the fifth is love and personal happiness, the sixth is everything that connects with friends and colleagues, seventh - legal matters, eighth - mental and physical health, possible accidents, ninth - all the positive aspects and virtues of the person being told fortunes, tenth - failures and successes that happened in the past and may also occur in the future, eleventh - advice, help, protection, twelfth - disasters and misfortunes that will happen in the future.

Card meanings and rules of interpretation of the Papus Tarot

The Papus Tarot, like a traditional deck, consists of 78 cards, of which 22 are major Arcana, and the remaining 56 are minor. The Minor Arcana are divided into four suits: Cups, Sticks, Swords, Denarii. Cups are cards that predict the passage of time, Sticks or Canes are growth, health, happiness, Coins are financial affairs and money, Swords are grief, misfortune and suffering. Before analyzing the cards that Papus created, the predictive Tarot requires you to pay attention to the suits.

If there are an abundance of cards of the Swords suit, then the person is inclined towards business and entrepreneurial activity, he is proactive and able to overcome any obstacles.

Cups predict abundance in financial terms, as well as the support of generous and sympathetic people. Sometimes cards of this suit can talk about management activities in government agencies.

Denarii are happiness in personal life and good luck that have been or will appear in a person’s life. If there are many cards of this suit in the layout, then the fortuneteller is a creative person whose flight of imagination is unlimited.

In order for fortune telling to be correct, it is necessary to remember that the meanings can be either straight or inverted. For example, the King with a scepter - the minor Arcanum symbolizes an attractive and strong man who is respected in society, he is distinguished by honesty and generosity, and easily endures all the hardships of life. In the literal sense he is a village man, and in the inverted sense he is a kind man. Such a card often predicts news from distant relatives, unexpected achievements and successes, and a promotion at work.

The Queen of Canes also has different meanings. In the upright position, she is a kind and intelligent woman who has a balanced character and calm disposition. She is successful in her career and personal life, she always has a successful marriage. But when turned upside down, this card has a completely opposite meaning.

This is a lady whose character is absolutely unpredictable and unbearable. At the same time, it is economical and sometimes even stingy. For a fortuneteller, such a card brings betrayal of people, unfounded accusations and difficulties in financial matters. In the upright position, it predicts a happy life and pleasure.

The Papus Tarot is a deck that is easy to use for predictions by an experienced magician, however, beginners may have problems. To avoid them, you first need to remember the meanings of all Arcana, analyze possible combinations of cards, and only then begin practice.

Predictive Tarot is a deck by the great French esotericist Gerard Encausse, combining a simple graphic style and amazing semantic depth. Over its more than century-long history, it has gone through several dozen reprints and is still extremely popular.

A little about the deck creator

Gerard Encausse (Papus) was the author of more than twenty books and many articles on occult topics. His most famous works are “The Gypsy Tarot,” the first edition of which was published in 1889, and the no less entertaining work “The Predictive Tarot,” which was released to the public two decades later. Encausse is considered one of the most prominent representatives of the so-called “French” school of tarology and an authority in the field of occultism. Very early (at the age of seventeen), having been initiated into one of the Masonic lodges, Monsieur Gerard was actively involved in the study of magic, mantika, and Kabbalah.

In 1887, Encausse became a co-founder of the Martinist Order, a society whose members devoted themselves to studying the secrets of the universe. It is interesting that, unlike many similar organizations, the order managed to survive and continues its mission in the age of space flight and the Internet. At the same time, Gerard discovered the teachings of Blavatsky, but his communication with the followers of the Mahatmas did not last long: the young man did not like the excessive enthusiasm for Eastern teachings.

A year later, Encausse participated in the creation of the Order of the Rose and Cross, another long-lived organization. Despite his hectic social life, Gerard manages to engage in education: having defended his dissertation six years later, he becomes a doctor of medicine. Already in adulthood, he adopted the literary pseudonym “Papus”. The medical occultist had an outstanding sense of humor and knew how to laugh at himself: a more serious person would not have chosen the name of a funny character from a classic comedy as a pseudonym.

Legends and history

At the time of writing The Divinatory Tarot, most of Europe (France in particular) was experiencing a fascination with Egyptian antiquities. Among the occultists of that time there was a legend that the inhabitants of the kingdom of the pharaohs received all their extraordinary knowledge from settlers from the dying Atlantis. Cunning refugees taught the ancestors of the Egyptians writing, counting, construction, medicine, but their main gift was the Arcana of the Tarot, depicting all the processes occurring in the universe. The grateful natives first carved them on huge stone slabs, then copied them onto smaller metal plates, and then it wasn’t far from papyrus. In the dark period of decline of the Egyptian-Hellenic culture, a group of priests turned a set of sacred symbols into gambling fun. So Tarot cards became another (by no means the first and certainly not the last) game that claims to be a repository of ancient secrets.

Most likely, Papus shared the point of view of the majority. In his second book, “The Predictive Tarot,” the doctor offered the public a complete system of Egyptian fate prediction, personally restored by him. It took him more than twenty years to restore the ancient secrets. In addition to the teachings of the priests, the book contained pages with black and white drawings of maps by Gabriel Gulin. The arcana had to be carefully cut out and glued onto thick cardboard. It was believed that such manipulations increased the “affinity” of the deck with the fortuneteller, who could now be considered one of the creators of his set. The new doctor deck was made (as you might guess) in the style of the land of the pyramids. People in strange clothes, sphinxes, crocodiles, lions... exotic. The audience was delighted.

In 1982, the Tarot was republished in the USA. The artist did a serious job: the outdated drawings had to be redrawn in a more modern style, improved, colored, in a word, to please the spoiled American consumer. Papus's compatriot, Stephane Olivier, agreed to breathe new life into Monsieur Gerard's creation. The Frenchman turned out to be a master of his craft, and the rarity began to shine with new colors.

In the early 90s, the republics of the former Union were covered by a wave of occult literature. Not without the first books on Tarot, and a little later there was a demand for the cards themselves. One of the now-forgotten publishing houses ordered an artist, whose name was lost in the darkness of history, to create a copy of Papus’s deck. The performer turned out to be a creative person: he did not copy the cards, but drew an almost original deck, later known as the first Russian Tarot. They didn’t yet know about copyright in the countries of victorious wild capitalism and didn’t want to know, which is why the new set became pure pirates. Now you can find both the original monochrome and more modern color versions of the Divinatory Tarot.

Description

Each of the Major Arcana in the Papus system corresponds to a planet, a zodiac sign, an element, a number and letters of several alphabets at once. The Parade of Trumps opens with the Magician, the restless Jester has found his place between the Court and the World, he is the twenty-first in the deck. Justice was in eighth place, Strength - in eleventh. Gerard Encausse attached special importance to the second Arcana: the Pope (Priestess). It was believed that the appearance of a stately woman in a high headdress and a face covered with a veil meant Isis Urania, the goddess of wisdom and occult knowledge, the patroness of secret societies. She sits on a throne between two columns - symbols of Freemasonry, in the hands of a woman is a book of wisdom.

The name “Isis” ran like a red thread through Papus’ life. He was closely acquainted with Helena Blavatsky; her life's work, Isis Unveiled, left an indelible impression on Gerard's soul. Papus called one of his magazines “The Veil of Isis”; on the title page of another, called “Misteria”, the goddess of wisdom was depicted. Later, already in Russia, Papus’s students publish a new magazine, “Isis,” in which they publish the translated works of their mentor and the works of other leading esotericists. Modern occultists consider the Egyptian goddess to be the patroness (among other things) of the decks created by Ankoss, granting followers high accuracy of predictions. There are 16 court cards in the deck, in each suit:

  • king;
  • queen;
  • knight;

The disadvantage is the lack of illustrations of license plates (there are 40 of them). This is not a problem for experienced fortune tellers, but beginners will have to work hard to remember the meanings. Papus did a great job systematizing, ordering, simplifying, making the teachings of his predecessor Etteilla more accessible to the average person of that time, but the language in which the “Predictive Tarot” was written may seem heavy to the modern reader. In this case, the study of the system should begin with the books of Monsieur Gerard’s followers, written already in our century.

Introduction to the deck and its development

A child of the leisurely 19th century, Papus believed that the oracle should be treated with respect.

  1. The deck had to be stored in a specially purchased box, first wrapped in a clean cloth (embroidery in the form of letters of the Hebrew alphabet or Egyptian hieroglyphs was welcomed).
  2. The table before the session should be covered with a green tablecloth.
  3. Start fortune telling only in a state of spiritual purity and complete calm.
  4. Shuffle the cards three times (no more and no less!).
  5. Remove with your left hand.

Time makes its own adjustments. Old traditions are sometimes observed, but more often the deck gathers dust on the nightstand, and people begin to predict the future “out of impulse.” Despite this disrespect, Tarot works. In his book, Papus described more than a dozen methods of fortune telling using both the Arcana and ordinary playing cards. The master recommends first finding a card in the deck that symbolizes the questioner, surrounding it with the Major Arcana, meaning the main events in his destiny, then laying out the outer circle of the Minor Arcana. According to the old French method, the Major and Minor Arcana were shuffled separately, when analyzing the problem, only one suit was used (Denarius was suitable for trade matters, Staves were responsible for careers, Cups were laid out “for love”, Swords helped to find out the cause of all sorts of misfortunes).

The "questioner's card" was usually the Emperor for men, while the Empress was for women. In Papus's cards, when fortune telling about a person in love, the King of Cups was placed in the center of the layout. After purchasing a deck, you should not immediately bombard it with dozens of questions: this is not the best way to “make friends” with it. Every magical tool requires respect, and Tarot cards are no exception.

Before getting acquainted with the classic set of cards, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the works of its creator, the works of his predecessors and contemporaries, in a word, get into the spirit of the era. This will help a novice tarot reader understand the author’s logic, evaluate the deck’s potential, and find clues hidden in each drawing.

Papus's system cannot be called simple. To fully understand it, fortunetellers must have at least superficial knowledge of astrology, numerology, Kabbalah, and mystical symbolism. The method of intuitive study, so popular in our time, often fails: any good deck has several layers of meaning; working with all of them without proper theoretical preparation is not possible. The deck itself is quite versatile: it can be used both for self-knowledge and for solving everyday problems. This benefits the beginner: he gets the opportunity to practice the simplest “Daily Fortune telling” by asking the oracle everyday questions and checking the answers at the end of the day. After a couple of weeks, it’s worth moving on to more complex layouts. Good luck!
