The name "Impressionism" arose after the exhibition in 1874 in Paris, which exhibited Monet's painting "Impression. Rising Sun" (1872; in 1985 stolen from the Marmottan Museum in Paris and today is listed by Interpol). More than seven exhibitions of Impressionist artists were held between 1876 and 1886; at the end of the latter, only Monet continued to strictly follow the ideals of Impressionism. "Impressionists" are also called artists outside of France, who wrote under the influence of the French style of Impressionism (for example, the Englishman F. W. Steer).
