Thirteen Years on the Way

One hundred and six years ago, the ship "Antey" left the Earth.

And no matter how great its speed, no matter how negligible the resistance of the cosmic vacuum to a giant bullet, the flight path of which connects the Earth and the Cygnus alpha, already indistinguishable even in the most powerful telescope, the path will take a total of one hundred and nineteen Earth years.

One hundred and six years have passed on Earth since the day seventy-six cosmonauts, in last time looking at the blue sky, at the fluff of clouds and green trees, they entered the planetary boats, and they soared up, where at an altitude of one and a half thousand kilometers, in a constant orbit, Antey was waiting for them.

When they flew in, they could look around this house from afar. To some, the spaceship looked like a clumsy insect, to others it looked like a broken children's toy. Antaeus will never have to descend to Earth or to another planet. He was destined to be born in space, where he was collected, and die there. Therefore, the designers created it without regard to the resistance of the environment. To an unfamiliar eye, it seemed an illogical combination of rings, pipes, balls, antennas and cubes.

While the ship was picking up speed - and it took months to accelerate - the crew of the Anthea could see the Earth. At first it occupied half of the sky, but gradually it turned into a fading point among millions of similar and brighter points ...

So the journey began. One hundred and six years have passed.

In another thirteen years, "Antey" will reach its goal.

Pavlysh passed the twenty-fourth reserve corridor and stopped in front of the door to the greenhouse. The greenhouse was abandoned fifty years ago, and, except for the mechanics, no one came here.

The door did not move immediately. As if its mechanism had forgotten how to open.

When Stanzo talked about the abandoned greenhouse, Pavlysh imagined that he would see a lush jungle, thickets of vines and strange flowers hanging from the crowns.

The greenhouse was a secret, a discovery. The journey to her - more than an hour's walk through the empty corridors and halls of the ship - prepared for a secret.

The path turned out to be ordinary.

Somewhere halfway, he met a cleaning robot, and in the "D" balloon he got into the area of used warehouses - they were dimly lit, empty boxes and containers were piled up in echoing halls.

Desolation reigned here. The paint on the walls, theoretically eternal, has faded, and the sheets of plastic sheathing have fallen behind in some places. It smelled of warm dust.

Pavlysh could not get rid of the feeling that emptiness was watching him. That she has eyes.

The ship was inhabited by memory.

He was the oldest ship on Earth. He was over a century old.

Over the years, new alloys and light sources have been invented on Earth, even boxes and containers would have been different if Antey had set off a hundred years later. Everything would be different.

The ship was not decrepit, but very old. It was designed to be in space for many decades. And still got old.

And gradually it became empty.

One by one, his warehouses were emptied, the distant premises and corridors were closed - there was no longer any need for them. On the day when Pavlysh went to look for the abandoned greenhouse, there were twice less people than one hundred and six years ago. The living, active part of the ship shrank every year. Thus, a deserted village is besieged by a forest, occupying already unnecessary fields and mows.

Pavlysh opened the door to the greenhouse and was disappointed, because there was no violent jungle there.

Long dry beds.

Among the dried stems are thorny bushes. Brown grass at the feet, whips of degenerated peas crawling along the walls, in some places flasks and test tubes remained on dusty laboratory tables - many years ago someone put experiments here. Now there is enough greenhouse in the ball "B".

The stems rustled and shuddered.

Something gray darted towards the far end of the greenhouse. Pavlysh drew back. There could be no one on the ship. No one more.

He jumped out the door and pressed the button. First you need to isolate the room. Then call for help. Anything that is unknown is incomprehensible - it can be dangerous. Not only for Pavlysh - for the whole ship.

The door slid shut reluctantly. Pavlysh stood alone in a very quiet corridor. The ceiling glowed steadily.

He was on a ship where nothing could enter from outside.

There must be a real explanation for what he saw.

He will be good if he comes running to Stanzo and says that he saw something in an abandoned greenhouse. And what? Something.

Then Pavlysh opened the door again.

He closed it behind him. So that this Incomprehensible could not get out. Then he cautiously walked forward.

He tried not to step on the beds. Ceramic tiles the floors crunched underfoot. Some fell out easily. There was an unpleasant, rotten smell in the greenhouse.

Two steps away from the place from which something jumped out, Pavlysh froze.

About ten meters away there was a rounded wall - the end of the greenhouse.

And then he saw.

There, in the interlacing of branches, sat two gray cats.

They stared at him, intelligently and wary. In the twilight — here the illumination was much weaker than at the entrance — their eyes glowed with an evil yellow fire.

What was still missing, - Pavlysh said aloud. You should have guessed right from the start.

Once someone decided that animals were needed on the Antaea. Homemade. Such that they will not eat much, but will brighten up the loneliness of people.

And a cat family appeared on the ship.

And although they followed her, tried to control the number of this tribe, it is not the first time that illegal, unaccounted for cats were found in the remote corners of the ship.

Cats need something to eat. This means that they mastered the ventilation ducts, and the greenhouse was not as isolated as it seemed.

Live, - Pavlysh allowed the cats.

He bent down and pulled a pale, almost white stalk out of the ground.

Some kind of life was still glowing. It will be necessary to tell Christ, let him look here.

There were no more ghosts in the greenhouse.

Ghosts are part of ship folklore. For more than a hundred years, folklore must have arisen on the ship.

In the depths of his soul, Pavlysh wanted to see a ghost. This does not mean that he believed in such nonsense. But when the ship is so old and endless, there must be something extraordinary lurking in it.

3

Pavlysh did not want to return to the living part of the ship.

There will immediately be cases. And when else will you be able to repeat this leisurely journey?

Pavlyish walked from the greenhouse to the connecting tunnel, through which you can go to the Outer Garden. And through it to return back.

On the way, he looked into the former library. At one time, part of the dwelling cabins were located in this sector of the ship, and the library branch was located nearby.

There was another smell in the library - the smell of film. Cells for microfilm and videotapes have been uncovered. Some still have ribbons.

Pavlysh knew why. When the library was transported, they did not take those tapes that were duplicated in the main one.

Pavlysh understood that even here he was not expected to be opened, but still spent a few minutes reading the inscriptions on the cassettes.

In one of the drawers he found the eighth, sixteenth and twentieth episodes " Underwater world”Which were not in the main library.

Then I found several cassettes without labels. He also took them with him.

Twenty minutes later he reached the connecting tunnel and stopped in front of the elevator.

It was brighter here, sometimes they came here.

The elevator lifted Pavlysh up several tiers, which was a conventional concept, since the bottom is always the center of the ship, the top is its outer rooms. The gravitational field generated by the motors lurked in the central ball.

The common room in front of the entrance to the Outer Garden was also empty.

In the pool, the water froze like a bluish mirror. So even and motionless that Pavlysh wanted to break this stillness. He reached into his pocket. Pavlysh always has something superfluous in his pockets. Fingers groped for a metal ball. Pavlysh threw him into the pool. The mirror shuddered, splashed a column of water, and scattered in circles, licking the sides of the pool.

That's much better.

Low plush sofas braced around the pool. Pavlysh jumped onto the sofa in a big way, uncomfortably sat down on the bag with cassettes that he was dragging from the library. The sofa came to life, trying to fit in with Pavlyh's body.

Pavlysh imagined that he was at the Nautilus. In it, somewhere in the depths, lives its last inhabitant, old Captain Nemo.

Could it be Maria Celeste? An unexpected disaster struck the schooner. For some reason, everyone left the ship, every last man. And the pot is still warm on the stove.

No, he's on desert island... Here it is, a dark forest, behind a glass wall. High to the right in the wall is a gray circle. Patch.

When Pavlysh was not yet in the world, a meteorite landed in the Outer Garden "Anthea". This happens with ships. Even though the best minds of the Earth thought about the Antaeus meteorite protection — not a single crumb of matter should have touched the ship: the price was too high — nevertheless, sixty years ago, Antey fell into a powerful meteor shower. So powerful that one of the stones reached the ship.

The fantastic novel "Village" by Bulychev speaks of hope, which helps to survive even in conditions of unearthly aggression. This hope helps to remain human, not to lose human face even to those who were not born on Earth.

The novel begins with sketches of life in this very village. At first glance - in the most ordinary, albeit poor and abandoned. However, you gradually realize that the action takes place in the future, even on another planet. The earth, I would like to believe, will not become like this: aggression is poured out simply in everything. For example, in the forest people are attacked by vines, mushrooms burrow from the "hunters" into the ground, tumbleweeds become a terrible poisonous weapon, trees shrink under dense bark ... What to say about animals? The attack of the "wolves" is akin to a natural disaster, although these poisonous creatures fight one by one, while their other companions are watching, as if at a show.

The inhabitants of the village are also very "wild", although, in case of danger, the community stands up for everyone. But here the conflict of generations is at its peak: the elders are telling "fairy tales" about the Earth, the young are more reminiscent of Mowgli. Old tells them about life "there", it is too hard for the rest of the earthlings to remember - women, for example, immediately start crying.

Of course, we can talk about some kind of degradation of the descendants of earthlings in this aggressive environment. It turns out that a spaceship once crashed on this inhospitable planet. But people, even after so many years, are trying to get to him, dreaming of the Earth.

A team of young people is being formed (Maryana, Dik, Oleg, Thomas), who decide to reach the wreckage of the ship, which no one has yet succeeded in hot-air balloon... This was the third attempt to return to Earth, because, it is clear that on this aggressive planet, a small group of earthlings (there are almost forty of them, along with the children born here) have no future. The main character of the novel is Oleg, a somewhat morose fifteen-year-old boy who is in love with Maryana, but he is not as strong and daring as the hero Dick.

Here astronauts land on their planet, who must destroy the traces of the crashed ship in order to erase the traces of earthlings on the "wild" planet. In the final, two expeditions (earthlings and "natives") meet. The finale remains open - everything ends with a shout of either joy or horror.
Of course, I want to believe that all the efforts and suffering of the lost earthlings were not in vain.
By the way, based on this work, two comics and even a cartoon were created.

About the book "Village" Kir Bulychev

One of the most famous science fiction writers and writers of the Soviet era, Kir Bulychev, became a guide to a new world for many fans of original and incredible stories. His novel "The Village" is one of the books of the "Pavlysh" cycle, which gained incredible popularity during the author's lifetime, even though the plots of the individual books are not related to each other. Modern critics call the novel "Robinsonade", since the main problem of the main characters is to survive on an uninhabited part of the planet.

In the center of the events of the book "Village" is the spaceship "Polyus". By a joke of fate, he was thrown to the very edge of the Universe - to an uninhabited and unknown planet, which later became home to several generations of earthlings. The breakdown of the ship necessitated an emergency landing in a place where no one had ever been before. But Kir Bulychev would not have been himself if he had not filled the novel with an interesting and at the same time most dangerous plot.

The spacecraft was not a vehicle for the military crew, but for ordinary civilians who got on it with their children. Uncharted terrain and a non-working vehicle are just the beginning of the "game". Such a native means of movement in endless space became the most dangerous place for earthlings - because of the radioactive elements, it was impossible to be near it. The disappointing state of affairs forced the crew to hastily move away from the only familiar object on new planet, to survive. This is how the "Village" was formed.

People were incredibly lucky, because the biosphere of the planet, although it was extremely aggressive, nevertheless turned out to be suitable for life. For the next seventeen years of their existence, earthlings tried to survive and develop a new area. The struggle for life was not successful for everyone, but where one generation died, another was born. Many children no longer believed that the Earth was not a fiction or a fairy tale. Others tried to help and risked own life to prove otherwise.

In the book "Village" Kir Bulychev tells the story of striving for life in the difficult conditions of boundless space. About how a group of young people is entering the battle for the fate of all who have been on an alien planet for a long time. They decide to reach the Pass - the point where their ship once remained - in the hope that the radiation has already subsided, and they will be able to catch a saving connection with the Earth. Everyone knows that this is a difficult task where not everyone will survive. Are the heroes willing to pay this price to save the rest? Will their campaign be successful, or is there a new, even more unpredictable danger hiding around the corner?

Quotes from the book "Village" Kir Bulychev

It is very foolish to wait, the most common and most wrong thing to do. One must live so as not to wait at all ...

... the sense of humor should serve as the criterion for the civilization of the world.

... the difference between the conquerors lies only in the duration of their successes.

When you run through the dungeons with children, be sure to look around and count the children.

Waiting is always bad, especially when you don't know how the wait will end, but for some reason we are always waiting for something. There is no time even to live ...

Sally looked at the children. It turned out to be a lot of children, it somehow did not even occur to her that people here, in this dirty abyss, could bear children. There was something animal, humiliating about it.

... even death is not so terrible for a person if he knows about the continuation of his kind. Death becomes final at the moment when not only you disappear with it, but everything that tied you to life.

Oleg has always tested for paper special feeling... Paper, even a blank piece of paper, was magically associated with knowledge. She was created to express knowledge. The paper was like a manifestation of a deity.

Then death is better, ”Sally said with conviction.
“Death is never better.

Without history, people cease to be people.
